KUKI SHINDEN RYU - HAPPO HIKEN [KUKI TAISHO] theme of the year 2007

Kukishin Ryu (????, Kukishin Ryu ?) or "Nine Gods Spirit School" is a Japanese martial art allegedly founded in the 14th century CE by Ryushin Yakushimaru Kuki. It is a sogo bujutsu, meaning that it teaches several different weapons/arts such as taijutsu, bojutsu, naginata, kempo, hanbo,sojutsu and heiho. Kukishin Ryu and its founder are listed in the Bugei Ryuha Daijiten or "The Encyclopedia of Martial Art Schools", a record of modern (gendai) and old lineage (koryu) Japanese martial schools.

• ? "Ku" stands for "nine" in Japanese.

• ? "Ki" as seen on the far left is actually an incorrect kanji for the name. It is supposed to be a kanji meaning "Kami" or god but it is now-long obsolete (compare above). This is because over the years the older character became lost due to the need to simplify/unify the Chinese Characters used in Japanese writing. So, the similar character of ? (oni or demon) is used in its stead. This inadvertantly changes the meaning of the name to modern readers, who rightly believe that it reads "Nine Demons;" yet in fact the character was originally pronounced as "Oni-gami"(holy spirit) as opposed to "Oni" (evil spirits). The name "Ku-ki" is therefore actually "Ku-kami" yet, it has been customarily pronounced as "Kuki" since the Edo period.

• ? "Shin" or "kami" means god or spirit- the English interpretation of "spirit" works better as "Nine Gods God School" sounds redundant and creates problems in comprehension.

• ? "Ryu" transliterates originally as "flow," however when related with the transmission of traditions as martial arts and appended to the name of a style or system, it means "school."

Roppo Kuji no Biken / Budo no Kiso theme of the year 2004

This year theme is Roppou Kuji no Biken budo no Kiso with emphasis on Daisho Jutaijutsu using Juppo Sessho no Jutsu as I understand it, I've been told its a feeling rather then a technique. What attract's me to the concept of juppo sessho is the idea of going beyond time and space.
If I may paraphrase here:
"There is nothing to see thus nothing to grab. If you seek juppo sessho you will find nothing" Hatsumi Sensei

Hatsumi Sensei say so far this year, the theme is "Roppo Kuji Happo Biken." I have heard little or no elaboration on this so far, so I think more will be said about it in the coming weeks and months. I have heard that the "kuji" part refers to control of the opponent's spirit.

Roppo here I assume means 6 directions, Happo meaning 8 of course, and last year we had Juppo (10). I assume there is some connection here, but I haven't heard Sensei's explanation of it yet.

Yugên no Sekai

Yugen : The subtle and the profound.

Yugen is at the core of the appreciation of beauty and art in Japan . It values the power to evoke, rather that the ability to state directly. The principle of Yugen shows that real beauty exists when, through its suggestiveness, only a few words, or few brush strokes, can suggest what has not been said or shown, and hence awaken many inner thoughts and feelings.

"The meaning of "yugen" can be explored by looking at the meaning of the chinese characters used to write the word. Yu means hazy, dim, dark, deep, quiet, otherwordly, and is found on such words as yushi (deep contemplation), yuhei (confinement), and yukon (spirits of the dead).
Gen means subtle, profound, or dark and it is also a name for the other world. It is seen in the in words geno (inmeasurable depth), genshu (subtle beauty), and gensi (profound mystery or esoteric truth).

Yugen, the combination of these two characters expresses profoundity and evanescence detached from reality and indicates a mystical state in which beauty is but a premise, something of an unknowable nature."
